Hello LDSS-ers...
For those of you who are new to this professional development group, welcome! As we intend for this blog to be as informational and helpful as possible, please bookmark this puppy and check it regularly.
Here is our (rough) final schedule for the Spring.
First official meeting-Tuesday, February 17th at 5:15 - 6:15 p.m. Room TBA. The LDSS Job Climate.
Ivan and Cam Helkowski, the Associate Director of LUC's Career Development Center, will be speaking about the LDSS job climate and what to expect when we graduate. We hope it will be a mix of both what kinds of LDSS jobs are out there (which Ivan will address) and how to go about getting them (which Cam will address).
Note: As Kevin mentioned below, for those of us in Evette's class that evening, we have a field trip at the Art Institute. I have already let Evette know that we have this meeting, and that a bunch of us may be late due to travel time. She was cool with it...
Second meeting-Tuesday, March 17th at 5:00 p.m. Room 401, Maguire Hall (where most of us have Ivan's class). 'Non-traditional' Social Work paths
Professor Breezer Rickey will be hosting a discussion session of her experiences after graduation in community organizing, international social work and other 'non-traditional' social work paths. This should be a nice addition to the first meeting's discussion around the job climate, and will hopefully give us more ideas for paths after graduation.
Third and final meeting-Sometime in April (more details TBA). Pathways to Becoming an Executive Director
As we discussed at the pseudo planning meeting last Tuesday, we have decided to scale down this event to just our LDSS professional development group, as opposed to opening it up to a wider audience (we realized that few of us have the time to plan such an event). The idea is to have a mix of executive directors and program managers to talk about their career paths.
That's about it for now! Mark those calendars, and, as always, come to me or Laura Vermette with questions.
We'll let you know once we have a room for next Tuesday's meeting....
